Guangzhou, a.k.a. Canton, is southern China’s centuries-old trading port. Today the city is a booming metropolis of 14 million, the Mecca of the global consumer society.

With its vast international trading centers selling every “Made in China” good imaginable, Guangzhou is a key destination for globetrotting entrepreneurs. Every month, tens of thousands of African businesspeople travel here to buy goods that they will sell back home. Some have chosen to stay in this foreign land and for these Africans, China looks like the new land of opportunity, a place where anything seems possible. But is it?

GUANGZHOU DREAM FACTORY, a compelling examination of 21st century global capitalism, follows a filmmaker’s journey from Ghana to China and back to Africa. Featuring stories of Africans who are chasing alluring, yet elusive, ‘Made in China’ dreams, GUANGZHOU DREAM FACTORY provides viewers with a rare glimpse of African economic development in an age of endless outsourcing.

With major funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.
